department (ED) patients to reduce at-risk drinking. METHODS: We enrolled patients aged

We thank the author of this letter for his interest in the topic of brief intervention to reduce
high-risk drinking, and we are happy to address the questions that are raised.First, the
numbers are indeed correct. As reported, among those in the lower AUDIT range of 7–18,
the control group consisted of 34 enrollees (5 who reduced drinking AUDIT scores to a low-
risk level and 29 who did not) and the intervention group consisted of 24 enrollees (11 who
