Failure analysis of triaxially braided composite under tension, compression and shear loading

BF Nega, K Woo - International Journal of Aeronautical and Space …, 2019 - Springer
In the current study, continuum damage mechanics-based progressive failure analysis was
performed to predict the initiation and progression of failure in triaxially braided textile
composite unit cell under tensile, compressive and shear loading conditions. Geometric and
finite element modeling was done at mesoscale unit cell level, with repeating nature of the
unit cell considered through the application of periodic boundary condition. Analysis result
was first validated with experimentally obtained stress–strain curve for uniaxial tension …

Failure analysis of triaxial braided composite

DS Ivanov, F Baudry, B Van Den Broucke… - … Science and Technology, 2009 - Elsevier
This study focuses on the description of damage and failure behaviour of triaxial braided
carbon/epoxy composites under tension. The tensile tests were instrumented with optical
surface strain and acoustic emission measurements. Damage was observed using X-ray
and microscopy. The damage develops in two stages:(1) intra-yarn cracking: increase of the
crack density and crack length,(2) local inter-yarn delamination and conjunction of the intra-
yarn cracks. Statistics of crack sizes at both stages were collected and the 3D geometry of …
