Abstract
In Brazil, the Neotropical termite Constrictotermes cyphergaster can be found in the biomes of Cerrado and Caatinga. Foraging occurs at night, which makes feeding habit information difficult to obtain. This work aims to record the food items consumed by C. cyphergaster in natural conditions. This study was performed in an area of Caatinga, at the Private Reserve for the Environmental Inheritance of Fazenda Almas, Paraiba State, Brazil. Foraging of eight colonies was monitored during ten days during the dry season and seven days during the wet season. Feeding habit was determined through photographic records. Feeding rates were measured as the difference in weight of workers before and after a foraging event. Constrictotermes cyphergaster fed almost exclusively on wood (trunks, branches and twigs), and to a lesser extent other substrates, such as cacti and bromeliads from the soil.
