Calibration is a crucial step in the application of hydrological models and is typically
performed using in situ streamflow data. However, many rivers on the globe are ungauged
or poorly gauged, or the gauged data are not readily available. In this study, we used
remotely-sensed surface water extent from the Global Flood Detection System (GFDS) as a
