On October 30, 2016, the European Union (EU) and Canada finally signed the
Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) after a considerable political
struggle. The Belgian region of Wallonia kept the signature of CETA in limbo for almost 2
weeks, as it refused to give its consent to the central Belgian government to sign the

On 21 September 2017, the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA)
between the European Union and Canada provisionally entered into force after its signature
in October 2016. The CETA is since provisionally applied with one significant exception, the
investment chapter. It will only enter into force fully and definitively, however, when all EU
Member States have ratified the agreement. Until then we must wait to see practical legal
