… This decay length appears to be in a good agreement with the most recent theoretical
calculations for hot electron mean-free-path in gold [4], corroborating our physical
interpretation of acoustic phonon generation by ballistic electrons. To summarize, using time-resolved
pump-probe measurements we have observed the generation of ultrashort acoustic pulses
in cobalt heated by ballistic electrons laser excited in gold. These measurements provide
the mean – free-path of ballistic electrons of 120 nm in gold and the electronic heat diffusion …
Ballistic hot electrons in fs-laser-excited gold are used to generate ultrashort (2 ps duration) acoustic pulses in cobalt. The exponential dependence of the acoustic amplitude on gold thickness provides the electron mean-free-path of 120 nm.
