An epoxide derived sol-gel procedure that was developed to prepare mixed oxides amorphous inorganic coatings of CeO2-SiO2 and TiO2-SiO2 was investigated. The CeO2-SiO 2 and CeO2-SiO2 mixed oxide UV-protective coatings were prepared at low temperature in order to take an advantage of the properties of the different oxides. The coating shows the very high tranparency in the visible region of the spectra, except for the thickest coatings, in which a detectable yellowish coloration caused by CeO2 could be observed. The UV-protective coating that prepared at high temperatures can not be applied on thermally unstable substrates such as organic materials and polymers. The TiO2-CeO2-SiO2 coatings is almost precepitable to the naked eye, giving the direct evidence of the UV protective coating.
