Abstract A 6-year-old, castrated male shorthair was evaluated for chylous effusion in the
thorax and abdomen. An underlying disease process was not determined. The cat
developed hyponatremia and hyperkalemia, which was attributed to the mechanical
drainage of pleural fluid and to the decreased urinary excretion of potassium.
