Abstract
To assess initiation and progression of Cardiovascular Diseases (CVDs) blood flow characteristics are known to play an important role. Moreover, since a strictly relation between alteration of blood flow hemodynamic and changes in morphology of the vessel has been demonstrated in many CVD, flow patterns study should be integrated with morphometric analysis (vessel size and shape). 3D cine Phase Contrast MRI (4D PCMRI) can extract a quantitative depiction of spatial distribution of blood flow velocity as function of time. This imaging technique is now considered the gold standard in research to study the blood flow characteristics evolving in thoracic aorta and it is also used in clinical protocol to extend traditional anatomic evaluation. The aim of this project is to develop advanced methods to allow and to improve the use of 4D PCMRI images of the thoracic aorta for hemodynamic and morphometric evaluations. Two main purposes can be distinguished: 1-to propose a new filtering approach able to denoise and regularize 4D velocity maps providing volumes suitable for hemodynamic applications and 2-to develop a new segmentation method to extract the vessel lumen and to create a 3D model which can be directly used to calculate patient-specific indices for a comprehensive morphometric and hemodynamic aorta characterization.
