For this study, 30 male Wistar rats were randomly allocated into 3 groups of 10 animals each. Group 1 served as control and was given the basal diet and tap water without DMBA. Rats from Groups 2 and 3 assigned to receive 0.1 nmol DMBA applicated on testis for 12 weeks. When the apoptogenesis process started, the rats of groups 3 and 4, received extract at a dose of 200 and 300 mg/kg/bw orally, respectively, 3 times per week. At the end of experiment, the rats were euthanized and the testis was removed. Histological evaluations for apoptosis were performed for testis. In the apoptotic group, while the integrity of interstitial tissue was conserved, the organized structure of cells forming the seminiferous tubules was completely disrupted and diffuse intercellular edema was observed. In the treated group the testis structure was preserved, and the interstitial tissue within the seminiferous tubules displayed a normal structure. The present study thus demonstrated the anti-apoptotic potential of pomegranate in DMBA induced testis apoptosis in rats.
