Summary
Mexico is a fishing country, and most of its production comes from the Pacific Ocean, with contributions from both industrial and artisanal fisheries. Most important resources include the small pelagics (sardine and anchovy), shrimp, jumbo squid from the Gulf of California, tuna from the tropical Pacific, and lobster and abalone from the west coast of the Baja California Peninsula. These regions exhibit strong seasonal and inter annual variability, including biological productivity, due to processes such as upwelling, tidal enrichment and fronts and ocean gyres. Sustained long‐term trends in the environment are different to other places of the World's Oceans with a strong warming signal. In fact, natural climate variability mainly related to multi‐scale patterns associated with tropical origin of El Niño and La Niña, the Pacific Decadal Oscillation and multi‐decadal scale variability known as Regime variability, also linked to highly uncertain and very diverse patterns in the length and sign of the recent temperature trends. Climate predictions are therefore highly uncertain and large analyses efforts have been more devoted to the analyses of the past. Adaptation will depend on quality information, and therefore research should be promoted to better understand the climate change impacts on marine ecosystems, the fisheries resources and their interactions with human society. Full implementation of the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries, developing a readily and timely information system, and the improvement of technical, administrative, organizational and social education of the fisheries sector, are key actions mentioned in this contribution.
