Large eddy simulation (LES) is conducted of the Sandia Flame D [Proc. Combust. Inst. 27
(1998) 1087, Sandia National Laboratories (2004)], which is a turbulent piloted
nonpremixed methane jet flame. The subgrid scale (SGS) closure is based on the scalar
filtered mass density function (SFMDF) methodology [J. Fluid Mech. 401 (1999) 85]. The
SFMDF is basically the mass weighted probability density function (PDF) of the SGS scalar
