A prehistoric coprolite thought to date from 10 000-7000 years before present, from Kruger
Cave near Rustenburg, South Africa, was examined for parasites. Part of the specimen was
rehydrated and found to contain helminth eggs. Three, with distinctive translucent polar
plugs, were identified as Trichuris eggs and a 4th was identified as a partially decorticated
Ascaris egg. This appears to be the first record of parasites in prehistoric coprolites from
South Africa.
Abstract
A prehistoric coprolite thought to date from 10 000-7000 years before present, from Kruger Cave near Rustenburg, South Africa, was examined for parasites. Part of the specimen was rehydrated and found to contain helminth eggs. Three, with distinctive translucent polar plugs, were identified as Trichuris eggs and a 4th was identified as a partially decorticated Ascaris egg. This appears to be the first record of parasites in prehistoric coprolites from South Africa.
