Abstract
This paper presents developments in methodologies for site characterisation and monitoring of contaminated land. It is based on a review presented at the NICOLE workshop on cost-effective site characterisation, Dealing with Uncertainties, Innovation and Legislation Constraints, held in Pisa, Italy on 18–19 April 2002. Critical aspects of the development and application of innovative technologies are emphasised.
Firstly, the issue of data and information is addressed. Chemical analytical information and spatial information are distinguished and linked to the need for site characterisation strategies. As for innovative site characterisation techniques, the paper presents a matrix showing the capabilities of technologies to generate spatial and analytical information.
