In this paper, a novel technique for optimal placement of phasor measurement units (PMUs)
with minimum number of branch current phasor measurements for complete and incomplete
observability has been presented. In the proposed algorithm, first the optimal placement of
PMU was determined using binary genetic algorithm, then this result was used to minimize
the number of current phasor measurement using genetic algorithm. The proposed
algorithm has been tested using IEEE 14 and 30 bus systems.
