Abstract
The natural Nardus stricta-dominant pastures of the high mountains have low forage production and nutritional quality but play an important role as summer grazing for the short-distance transhumance of dairy cattle (and sheep) in the Carpathian Mountains. Several strategies of improving the pastures are available, mostly involving 'pacage', i.e. a period of heavy grazing/trampling on a small enclosed area. The basic treatment with dairy cows is 1 cow 6 m-2 for 5 nights, during which there is excretal (nutrient) deposition. Adding selected input combinations from lime, fertilisers and introduced improved species to pacage can substantially increase forage production and quality. The positive effects of these inputs on the pasture botanical composition and soil agrochemical factors are presented in this paper.
