The community of Besut in Terengganu mainly uses the Kelantanese dialect as their main dialect. As dialect plays an important role in reflecting the identity of a community of speakers, this study aims to link dialect with the identity of the Besut community. This study was conducted using a modified framework based on Abdullah Hassan’s Identity Construction, the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis and the Wave Theory. A total of 120 respondents from Besut were selected using a questionnaire. The data was then analysed using quantitative and qualitative analysis. The findings of this study reveal that the use of dialect is that the speakers do not only use dialect to determine selfidentity. Apart from dialect, several other factors also play a part, such as culture, geographical location, ancestry and religion. This research provides insight into the true identity of speakers of the Kelantanese dialect in Besut.
