Abstract
The present study aimed for phytochemical screening of different extracts of Juniperus squamata root using standardized laboratory protocols. Furthermore, Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS) analysis was also performed for examination of bioactive constituents present therein. The plant root was extracted in different solvents viz., methanol, hexane and ethyl acetate which were subjected to phytochemical analysis to determine the presence of various secondary metabolites. Flavonoid, saponin, steroid, alkaloid, tannin, phlobatannin, phenol, reducing sugar, carbohydrate, glycosides, resin and antraquinone were evaluated in root extracts. The GC–MS analysis of crude extracts of Juniperus squamata root showed presence of different types of chemical constituents possessing unlike molecular weights and resulted in the identification of twenty three compounds. Further research on medicinal potential of these compounds is warranted for newer drug development.
