Whether the lack of detection of P. carinii signature sterols in some 1-ml samples was due to
the reduced amount of total sterols in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) samples obtained
from P. carinii pneumonia (PcP) patients, was investigated. Results showed that the BALF
samples from PcP-positive patients did not always contain sufficient amounts of sterols by
