Poetry is one of the kinds of literature that has been disregarded as one of the media in English language teaching and learning. The chance to explore and expand students’s knowledge and skills of English in fact can be attained by applying this media. Facing the phenomena in the teaching and learning process of English that learning English through poetry is challenging for the teachers as well as the students, this is also challenging to reveal the hidden benefit of it. This construction seems to be under-investing in the field of English Language Teaching (ELT). This systematic review aims at examining the state of the role of poetry in English Language Teaching in the research publications from 2016–2019. Five studies have been chosen to be reviewed about their (i) context,(ii) participants,(iii) focuss,(iv) methodology, and (v) findings. The result of this systematic review shows that quantitative and qualitative approach are applied in the reviewed studies, and majority of the participants are students at the university level. This review investigates about the use of poetry as media in English language teaching, what are the appropriate method to teach poetry in English class, and the role of poetry to develop the character education and about writing poetry itself. Good strategies in teaching and learning poetry can possibly achieve one’s English proficiency.
