In the African context, postcolonial approaches to the study of translation have focused primarily on one of three areas, all of which reflect the concerns with power and language that are characteristic of the postcolonial turn within translation studies more generally. First, scholars have explored the notion of writing‐as‐translation, arguing that the hybrid language that is sometimes a feature of African literature is produced through a process that is akin to translation. Second, studies of translations into other European languages of such writing‐as‐translation have identified tendencies toward homogenization and the elimination of difference, and have called for a decolonized translation poetics. Third, there has been a focus on extra‐textual factors relevant to translation, with critics concerned to examine the role played by publishing houses in selecting and shaping translations.
