Summary
Prescribed burning is traditionally practiced on moorland to maintain the dominant species, heather, Calluna vulgaris for sheep grazing, red grouse (Lagopus lagopus scoticus) production and wildfire prevention. Due to the high conservation value and ecosystem services provided by moorlands, good practice guidelines for prescribed burning are needed. This study considers the fire characteristics and vegetation biomass reduction (fire severity) during pressurised fuel assisted burning. Temperature profiles and pre-and post-burn biomass were recorded in 17 prescribed fires on Howden Moor in the Peak District, UK.
