Abstract
The 21st century students should have ability to use digital media respectfully, to think critically, and to analyze information accurately. One of the subject which has similar characteristics to those abilities are critical reading. This subject foster the students to be a critical reader. As critital readers, students should have ability to analyse, evaluate, and synthesize what they reads. One of indicator which can measure those abilities are through asking questions. Questioning is one of students exertion to conceive what they want. The question are not intended to create an environment of judgement, but rather to help students examine their attitude, belief, knowledge and logic. In fact, while reading, students quit from this track. They have been satisfy when they are able to understand the reading text and won’t to know more about that. When their teachers asked their own opinion, the students only cite something written on the passage. It seems that they do not have any original ideas and they are only become passive readers. Socratic Seminar is promoted to help students become critical readers. The purpose of a Socratic Seminar is to achieve a deeper understanding about the ideas and values in a text through sharing of perspectives, questions, and interpretations. In Socratic Seminar, students have great opportunities to explore their ideas, to appreciate others’ thoughts, also to help them process information and engage in deeper understanding of topics. Eventually, this paper would like to promote the implementation of Socratic Seminar in critical reading classroom to assist students facing 21st century challenges.
