Abstract
Discusses the advantages and disadvantages of the DSM classification, based on a Medline search for the period 1996–1999. It is concluded that the DSM system greatly increases the reliability of psychiatric diagnosis but that it has inherent disadvantages and risks. It is maintained that the use of alternative diagnostic systems or standardized measuring instruments can help to offset these advantages. However, since the (subjective) opinion of the clinician is a necessary part of diagnostics, broadly based training for a sufficient period of time is considered essential.(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
