Abstract
Free surface topography measurements are of great concern in many fields. In particular the knowledge of the topography of the free surface of a liquid contained in a partially filled cylinder externally excited can give fundamental information on the so called” sloshing” phenomena. In this paper the application of a recent technique, Reference Image Topography technique (RIT), for the reconstruction of the free liquid surface is presented. A brief introduction on the fundamentals of sloshing phenomenon treated in this work is given as overview. The state of the art of the RIT technique is shown and its application to sloshing is treated. The setup used to acquire topographic information from water sloshing in a cylinder of radius 40 mm partially filled to a level greater than twice the radius is illustrated. Results in the case of lateral excitation are shown with their relative uncertainties. The results obtained are compared with the linear incompressible theory in order to demonstrate the fesability of this technique applied to sloshing.
