The use of race in research is always problematic as it is loaded with dangers and
unforeseeable consequences. Where race (or ethnicity interpreted as colour-based) is used
as a variable or an 'explanation', politically constructed racial categories are reproduced,
thereby perpetuating stigma, discrimination, and racism. It was precisely this use of race that
