OBJECTIVE: In vivo, several drugs have been shown to increase fetal hemoglobin (HbF),
including 5-azacytidine (AZA), sodium butyrate (SB), and hydroxyurea (HU). Studies in K562
cells suggest that cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) is required for HbF induction;
