In the last years the use of the medium format digital cameras emerged as an alternative, with advantages because of their flexibility and cost effectiveness. Within this context, SAAPI project started aiming at the development of a medium format arrangement of digital cameras. This system is composed by two Hasselblad medium format digital cameras and a Sony infrared digital camera. The Hasselblad cameras are mounted in a dual configuration, increasing the terrain coverage and enabling the direct formation of a stereo model without the mosaicking process, required for virtual image generation. The system has also a dual frequency GPS receiver enabling automatic triggering and event recording, for direct georeferencing. Some flight tests were performed with a GSD of 14cm. This paper will present the main features of the SAAPI system and the preliminary results obtained with the test flight, showing its effectiveness and main drawbacks.
