Abstract
The 17 fungal and bacterial taxa identified on the seeds of the early varieties M98 and Congo Yellow and the late varieties Malayan and TGM344 are listed. Fewer species of microorganism were isolated from seed parts (cotyledons, embryo and testa) than from whole seeds. Pseudomonas syringae was the commonest pathogen on all the varieties tested. There were considerable differences between the 2 late varieties in the incidence of Aspergillus niger, Helminthosporium, Rhizoctonia solani, Rhizopus nigricans [R. stolonifer], Sclerotium rolfsii and Penicillium, while between the 2 early varieties differences were marked only in the incidence of Helminthosporium and R. nigricans.
