A prospective analysis of blood donors over a period of one year was done to assess the seroprevalence and the trend of hepatitis B infection. Bioelisa HBsAg rd colour, which is a 3 generation ELISA kit was used to detect the hepatitis B surface antigen in the donors as a marker of infection. A total of 2352 blood donors were studied. 12 (0.51%) were positive, which comes under the “low prevalence (< 2%) zone” per World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines. Male blood donors and donors from low socioeconomic groups showed higher seropositivity compared to female donors and higher socioeconomic groups.
