Abstract
The use of sympathetic blocks and trigger point injections continue to play a key role in the management of chronic pain. Some of the importantly used sympathetic blocks include sphenopalatine ganglion block, stellate ganglion block, celiac plexus block, splanchnic block, lumbar plexus block, and other sympathetic nerve blocks at the pelvic region. The indications for these blocks vary from trigeminal neuralgia to chronic regional pain syndrome (CRPS) and pancreatic cancer pain. Despite the multiple advances in the approach to performing these blocks, there are complications that the providers must be aware of before carrying out these procedures. The goal of this chapter is to discuss the anatomy, indications, procedural techniques, and complications associated with these therapeutic interventions.
