This study examines gender in Toni Morrison's novel Beloved. Gender defines the behavior
of the individual, how he/she walks, talks, eats, socializes and nearly all other features of
everyday life. Gender is significant in the definition of the self. The researcher has selected a

Abstract
This study examines gender in Toni Morrison’s novel Beloved. Gender defines the behavior of the individual, how he/she walks, talks, eats, socializes and nearly all other features of everyday life. Gender is significant in the definition of the self. The researcher has selected a novel, written by a black woman to explore the specific ways in which the black women suffer. The study locates the instances of the suppression of the black women by patriarchal institutions and the constraints of tradition. The study further demonstrates the ways in which Women form bonds in order to tackle this oppression. The conceptual frame work for this analysis is feminist theory.
