Smartphones have become an inseparable part of our family lives and of the process of raising our children. The present study examined the correlation between parental distraction caused by technology (technoference) and the problematic behaviors related to the use of digital technology (such as difficulties disconnecting from their smartphones), on one hand, and the psychological state of their offspring, on the other hand. We used a sample of 422 parents of minors: 81.8% mothers and 18.2% fathers. Findings of self-report questionnaires indicate that the greater the frequency of parental distraction, and the more severe their problematic use of technology was, the more complicated the psychological state of their offspring and the worse the parents' level of well-being were. The findings shed light on a widespread phenomenon that has received little attention, despite its negative effect on the functioning and well-being of families.(PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, all rights reserved)
