Abstract
The aim of this chapter is to study the translation of fictive dialogue in theatrical plays. More specifically, the chapter answers two questions:(1) what translation problems are raised in the process of recreating the oral features of theatrical plays in a written medium?; and (2) what are the choices made by translators when translating the fictive dialogue of theatrical plays? In order to answer these questions, the chapter presents a series of metalinguistic reflections by translators into two languages: Catalan and Spanish. For thematic purposes, these metalinguistic reflections are divided into five sections, which constitute the chapter:(1) fictive dialogue in classical texts;(2) diachronic level in fictive dialogue;(3) euphony in fictive dialogue;(4) naturalness in fictive dialogue; and (5) pronunciation in fictive dialogue.
