Foucault, 1980, 1990; Honneth, 1991) and developed by Laclau and Mouffe (eg Laclau and

This chapter takes aspects of a systemic view of power, as articulated by Foucault (e.g. Foucault, 1980, 1990; Honneth, 1991) and developed by Laclau and Mouffe (e.g. Laclau and Mouffe, 2001; Mouffe, 2005; Tor®ng, 1999), to explore certain power-related issues that might be considered when working with eating disordered clients from a feminist-oriented perspective. My interest in this issue is connected to my work in narrative therapy and discourse theory and analysis, and the hope that these ®elds might help practitioners, ®rstly, to empathise more meaningfully with those diagnosed with eating disorders and, secondly, to facilitate resistance against noxious aspects of contemporary power arrangements.
