Unconventional magnetic oscillations in a kagome Mott insulator

G Zheng, Y Zhu, KW Chen, B Kang, D Zhang… - Proceedings of the …, 2025 - pnas.org
In metals, electrons in a magnetic field undergo cyclotron motion, leading to oscillations in
physical properties called quantum oscillations. This phenomenon has never been seen in a
robust insulator because there are no mobile electrons. We report an exception to this rule.
We study a Mott insulator on a kagome lattice which does not order magnetically down to
milli-Kelvin temperatures despite antiferromagnetic interactions. We observe a plateau at
magnetization equal to 1 9 Bohr magneton per magnetic ion, accompanied by oscillations in …

Unconventional Magnetic Oscillations in a Kagome Mott Insulator

L Li - Bulletin of the American Physical Society, 2024 - APS
Recent observations on the Landau Level oscillations in narrow-gapped correlated insulator
raises intriguing questions on the origins. However, quantum oscillations have never been
observed in wide-gap insulators. In this study, we apply a strong magnetic field to a wide
band gap Mott insulator in a kagome lattice, which does not show magnetic ordering down
to milliKelvin temperatures despite an antiferromagnetic interaction. We observe a plateau at
magnetization 1/9 Bohr magneton per magnetic ion. Furthermore, near this plateau, we …
