Ellingson’s book is constituted by the metaphor of the crystallization process, which provides a means to describe her framework for understanding how qualitative methods fit together and can inform one another throughout the research process. Ellingson does not aim to provide a cookie-cutter approach to practicing qualitative methods or crystallization itself; rather she seeks to ‘‘provide a map of the terrain to guide those seeking to learn more, who could benefit from specificity and instructions’’(p. 4). Ellingson outlines principles of crystallization, which can include deep and thick description, attention to complexity of interpretation, use of more than one form of inquiry (eg, interviews, ethnography, poetry, autoethnography), and reflexivity. Most importantly, crystallization rejects the notions of positivist ideologies of objectivity and Truth. Seeing Truth as partial and socially constructed is a paradigm reified by crystallization. Ellingson offers an understanding of crystallization as a way of incorporating multiple qualitative methods that exist on a continuum from traditional qualitative inquiry on one side to artistic inquiry on the other. Ellingson emphasizes that crystallization is not simply a form of triangulation. Scholars employing triangulation typically seek to pinpoint Truth by examining discourse from different perspectives, but Ellingson does not emphasize seeking Truth through crystallization, rather many truths can and will present themselves through different forms of inquiry. At the beginning of the book, Ellingson provides an introduction to the metaphor of crystallization. In chapter 2 she discusses different epistemologies, as well as the ethical implications that accompany research using crystallization. Next, Ellingson offers an understanding of the qualitative continuum ranging from traditional qualitative methods (eg, grounded theory) on the one side to more artistic inquiry (eg, poetry) on the other. In chapter 4, Ellingson offers ways to apply crystallization
